Zach Nugent’s Dead Set, and Cats Under The Stars, will be taking up residence at Syracuse’s Westcott Theater this weekend. Friday night will feature two sets of Grateful Dead music, as interpreted by Dead Set. Saturday night will feature a two-set celebration of the music of the Jerry Garcia Band by Cats Under The Stars.
Born out of Burlington, VT’s legendary venue Nectar’s/Club Metronome’s Tuesday night Grateful Dead jam, Dead Set incorporates the Everyone Orchestra style approach with Nugent employing a rotating cast of musicians to power the band’s improvisation-heavy live performances. Taking a non-traditional approach to celebrating the Grateful Dead’s music, the ever changing cast gives each live performance it’s own direction and character. Past band line-ups have included members of Cat’s Under The Stars, Jon Fishman of Phish, Russ Lawton and Dave Grippo of Trey Anastasio Band, Rob Barraco of Dark Star Orchestra, Alan Evans of Soulive, Tim Palmieri of Kung Fu, Bill Carbone of Max Creek, Beau Sasser, Danny Mayer, David Gans, Melvin Seals, and too many more to name.
Cats Under The Stars delivers a sound best described by David Kemper, drummer of Jerry Garcia Band, “I think your band is at the top of the heap of JGB inspired bands. Zach plays more like ol’ Jer than anyone I’ve heard, and you all treat songs very much as we tried to do so many years ago.”
Attendees of this weekend’s run can expect an amazing celebration of the music of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead. Very special guests will include Tony Markellis of Trey Anastasio Band on bass, and Luke Smith of Strangefolk on drums. Doors open at 8PM/Show at 9PM, both nights.
