This month’s Fresh Tracks column brings ‘electro-dance-funk’ tones to the forefront. Teddy Midnight, originally formed by bassist Sean Silva out of Oneonta, NY, but now based in Brooklyn, has some serious funkadelic grooves kicking in their sets. Tunes are crammed with tasty musical nuggets that range from shadowy electronic beats to full on funkafied melodies, guaranteed to keep listeners dancing.
The current line-up, which also features Adam Magnan on drums, Sean McAuley on keys and percussion, and Wiley Griffin on guitar, bring a super tight punch, and pumped up energy, to their songs. Heavy influences are from a broad spectrum of bands, including The New Deal, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, and Medeski Martin and Wood.
Band favorites include Holy F*ck, Battles, Dopapod, SBTRKT and Consider the Source. The wide variety of music that influences their personal style is felt throughout their jams. Touches of psychedelia, electronica, straight up jam band, and bends of rock are majestically weaved around the curves of bending tones as they jam out.
They recently finished their first studio recording at Telefunken Studio and plan to release it later this summer. In the meantime, they’ve had a healthy dose of collaborations, playing with such bands as Twiddle, Dopapod, The Werks, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, to Brother’s Past, Kung Fu and lespecial. Disc Jam, The Werk Out, Great North, and Bellstock are just some of the major festivals that have been on their line-up this summer. At last year’s Catskill Chill, Griffin had the pleasure of joining forces with Twiddle on stage, as he sat in for their set at the fest. These guys clearly enjoy having fun jamming it out with as many different musicians as possible.
Their performance schedule includes some heavy hitting shows, which include a Brooklyn Bowl performance coming up right around the corner on July 17, with Cosmic Dust Bunnies and Gowanus. They will also be performing at a pre-party for Twiddle’s Tumbledown Festival, with Formula 5, at Nectar’s in Burlington, Vermont on July 28. Headed to the Disco Biscuits on August 19th in New York City? Make sure to head over to the after-party at DROM, where Teddy Midnight will be blowing the doors off and keeping the party going.
Even with all of the musical delights going on this summer, the band plans to head right back into the studio, fairly soon after the current album, that’s in final stages of production, will be released, to work on new material. If you haven’t seen these guys yet, put them on your radar. You do not want to miss this super fun, tight sounding group that will keep you on your feet all night. Make sure to head over to their official website for more details about the band, as well as the full schedule of tour dates.
