Holly Bowling has released her third vinyl release, #2 in her series of piano “jam transcriptions” on limited edition vinyl. The album features Phish’s “The Wedge,” from Northerly Island 7/20/14, and “Twist,” from Glens Falls 10/23/13, arranged for solo piano and pressed to red transparent vinyl. Featuring art by Isadora Bullock, the record forms a matching set with the transparent blue Tahoe Tweezer piano “jam transcription” vinyl released in 2015. Both are limited pressings of 500 copies. Only a few of the Tahoe Tweezer records remain so be sure to grab your copies before both are sold out.
A few words from Bowling about the album: “Of the two jams, the Chicago Wedge is definitely the better known of the two, but the Glens Falls Twist is a seriously underrated jam and is stunningly beautiful. I think it’s little known only because there were so many amazing moments of improvisation to come out of that fall tour that it gets overshadowed. Give it a listen. It’s a two-part jam, with each half being entirely different in character. Darkness vs light. Chiaroscuro. Dissonance vs harmony. Minor vs major. Driving energy and rhythms vs floating, soaring melodies. It’s worth your time, I promise.
I picked this jam to explore as a jam transcription because I could envision the ethereal second half translating well to the piano and really using its resonance. And because its a study in contrasts and opposites and balance and I love that. And because I couldn’t get that hauntingly beautiful melody out of my head, and I’m betting it will get stuck in yours too. Enjoy!”
